How it all began

Following a series of informal meetings in the late summer, the residents of Baldersdale South formed a community association, the “Baldersdale South Renewable Energy Community” (BSREC) on 14 October 2008.

The principle aim of the association is:

“to promote the development and use of sources of renewable energy”.

 Location

The community of Baldersdale South in Co Durham lies within the uplands of the North Pennines, extending from the outskirts of the village of Cotherstone up the River Balder valley to above Balderhead Reservoir 8km to the west and bordered by Cotherstone Moor to the south.

Within this area there are 24 Farms, Tourism Businesses, and Residences, which are all reliant on fossil fuels (mains electricity, LPG, oil) for their energy requirements. Much of the farmland is between 270 and 300m, on the edge of Cotherstone Moor. The lower farm areas are part of an ‘Area of High Landscape Value’ whilst the common land of Cotherstone Moor is within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Important Bird area.
